  The Rise and Fall of the Achaemenid Empire: A Scholarly Survey of the First Persian Empire, c. 550–330 BCE – Dr. Rahul S. Kharat Abstract The Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus II ("the Great") around 550 BCE and destroyed by Alexander III of Macedon between 334 and 330 BCE, was the largest empire the ancient world had yet seen, stretching at its height from the Balkans and Egypt in the west to the Indus Valley in the east. It was the first polity in recorded history to govern a vast multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic, and multi-religious population through a coherent administrative apparatus rather than through mere conquest and tribute extraction alone.
